Okay, this engagement happened so fast. Luqman finally returned to Malaysia for good since his work visa expired last May. We basically were thinking that maybe we should take our relationship to the next step. We both weren't sure if we wanted to do it right now, but we both were pressured by our parents, and also we have been together for 6 years now. So why not just take it to the next phase, right?

We didn't really have a grand plan for the engagement. The initial plan was just 'merisik,' where his parents go to see my family. But, I have no idea how it turned out to be an engagement. Luqman's parents and a couple of his aunties and uncles came to my place. My dad invited all my extended family.

Mind you, I wasn't there! I'm in New York, so I was there virtually. It was July 22, 2022. It was noon over there in Malaysia and midnight in the States. I was ready to go to bed, and suddenly I got a video call from Ayah. I had no idea I was supposed to call them. I was in my pajamas, wrapped myself in a blanket, ready to hit the bed. I quickly grabbed my shawl and put on whatever shawl was hanging in my closet. I put on my pink shawl and answered the call. Everyone was there, and they basically asked for my agreement, and I obviously said YES – duh! Then, I quickly said hello, and everyone started to congratulate me. Not gonna lie, it was very awkward. Luqman's mother showed me the ring and handed the ring to my mom. And so, we were engaged!

I'm glad that we didn't have to spend so much money on the engagement and kind of glad that I wasn't there because I hate being the center of attention.

And that's the story. My engagement was simple and not extravagant at all, which made it much easier. I'm thankful for that!

That's me. So awkward
